Signs of heat-related illness
Summer has arrived, and it is more important than ever to be mindful of heat and sun safety. Prevent illness and potential injury by knowing the signs and symptoms to monitor:
Sunburn: pain, redness and peeling of skin
Heat rash: red and itching rash from clogged sweat ducts
Fainting: weakness and dizziness caused by long heat exposure
Heat cramps: painful spasms of the muscles due to salt loss
Heat exhaustion: extreme fatigue accompanied by cool, moist skin, nausea and headaches
Heat stroke: extremely high temperature with little sweating, difficulty breathing, high blood pressure, dizziness and nausea. Could lead to seizure, fainting and a non-detectable pulse.

Heat Safety Tips and Tricks
Preventing these illnesses is vital in the summer months. Keeping a few tips in mind can keep you calm, cool and collected:
• Drink cool clean water every 15 – 20 minutes even if you are not thirsty
• Apply SPF 30 or higher sunscreen daily
• Avoid high sodium meals, alcohol and caffeinated beverages
• Dress in long sleeves and a hat to prevent sun exposure to your skin
• Rest often and take breaks in cool and shaded areas
• Avoid being in the sun for long periods of time
If you believe that you are experiencing a severe heat related illness, pull over and call 911. Use all resources you have to lower your body temperature such as a wet cloth, cold water or an ice pack. Also, download our free handout on how to beat the heat.
