HoWork zonew would you feel if drivers sped through your office space at 70 miles per hour? Every day, highway construction workers have to worry about on-site fatalities and injuries due to drivers speeding through their “office space.” To bring awareness to highway worker safety issues, the Federal Highway Administration, the American Traffic Safety Services Association and the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials started an annual spring campaign called National Work Zone Awareness Week.

Everyone is responsible for work zone safety. In honor of National Work Zone Awareness Week, Protective Insurance Company is offering a variety of resources to educate and inform drivers on safe work zone driving habits. In addition, here are some tips for driving safely through a highway work zone:

  1. Expect the unexpected.
  2. Slow down, be alert and heed the signs.
  3. Obey the flagger’s directions.
  4. Stay calm.
  5. Merge as soon as possible.
  6. Slow down when the signs say to.
  7. Leave extra following distance between you and the vehicle in front of you.
  8. Keep a safe distance between your vehicle and traffic barriers, construction equipment, vehicles and workers.
  9. Observe the posted signs until you see the one that says you have left the work zone.
  10. Expect delays, plan ahead and try an alternate route.
  11. Always watch the traffic conditions one mile down the road.
